This session will examine historical examples of how Adult Education has been involved in movements for social change and liberation, including Freedmens’ Schools that educated formerly enslaved people after the Civil War, and Settlement Houses that offered English classes to immigrants in impoverished urban centers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Participants will consider implications for how ABE classrooms and programs can be liberating spaces in our current social and political setting.
